A-Level Biology

At Filsham Valley School we follow the AQA Biology/Human Biology specification (5411/6411), however we do not currently offer the Human Biology part of the course.

The AS biology course comprises three modules, each divided into short topics. Module 1 covers the basics of biological molecules, cells, and begins a review of anatomy and physiology. Module 2 includes gene technology, the role played by DNA in cells, plant production, and control of reproduction. Module 4 is the coursework component where students will be expected to work independently on a given scenario.

The A2 biology course builds upon the knowledge gained at AS. Again the course is divided into three modules; 5,6 and 8.

Module 5 introduces the concepts of ecology, statistics and plant biochemistry. In Module 6 the main focus is on physiology and the environment. Students will be taught more about the structure and function of plants, and introduced to the nervous system, digestive system, and further detail on the respiratory system. Again there is a coursework component (Module 8) where students are required to work independently on a task of their own choosing.

The course is fully supported with a variety of resources including textbooks and revision guides. Students will have good opportunities for exam practice before they sit the actual exams. - Top

A-Level Chemistry

At Filsham Valley School we follow the AQA Chemistry specification (5421/6421). The course is split between the AS course and the A2 course, with each being taught by separate teachers.

The AS course offers an introduction into many aspects of Chemistry. Each module deals with the fundamental principles of chemistry; Module 1 covers the structure of the atom and bonding as well as trends in the Periodic Table. Module 2 allows students to study the principles of physical and inorganic chemistry. Module 3 introduces the students to the basics of organic chemistry. Students are also expected to carry out a practical examination that contributes towards their final award.

The A2 course follows a similar pattern to the AS, being broken into three modules. Module 4 extends the students' understanding of organic and physical chemistry. Module 5 furthers the inorganic chemistry as well as venturing into thermodynamics. A practical and synoptic examination finish the course in Module 6. - Top

A-Level Physics

At Filsham Valley School we follow the AQA Physics specification B (5456/6456). The course is split between the AS course and the A2 course, with each being taught by separate teachers.

The AS course offers an introduction into aspects of Physics.

Module1: Foundation Physics covers the underlying principles of mechanics and electrical circuits.

Module 2: Waves and Nuclear Physics allows students to study areas covered in their GCSE in greater detail.

Module 3: Practical Exam (2hrs) on content of AS course.

The A2 course follows a similar pattern to the AS, being broken into three modules.

Module 4: Further Physics extends the students' understanding into the areas of thermodynamics and quantum physics.

Module 5: Fields and their Applications includes Electromagnetic and Gravitational Fields, Nuclear forces and Radioactive decay. Students are also expected to answer synoptic questions covering both the AS and A2 course content.

Module 6: Practical Exam (3hrs) on content of AS and A2 course. - Top
