The National Curriculum and the Law

Science is a compulsory part of the National Curriculum at Key Stage IV. All students take balanced science, which means that they take a course which reflects all the subjects under the science umbrella.

The National Curriculum in Science includes:-

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • Aspects of other areas such as Geology and Astronomy

AQA Double Award Science Course
Pupils will study a Double Award Science GCSE course provided by the AQA board. The modular nature of the course will allow pupils to plot their own progress towards target grades at the end of key stage IV. It also means that some students may be offered the chance of taking extra modules and gaining a Triple Award GCSE. It will provide a very sound basis for those wishing to take science A-Levels, while being flexible enough to cater for a wide range of abilities. We will be setting classes accordingly.

This Double Award Syllabus means that it will eventually lead to two GCSE passes and obviously involves more material than a single subject, it therefore requires 5 periods a week (20% of the teaching time). It is taught by two teachers, so as to make use of their expertise and also so that the students have different staff to turn to for help.

Some of our students will be following the AQA GCSE in Applied Science (Double Award).

Course Content

The course is broken up into modules, examined externally throughout the course.

AQA Separate Sciences Course Content

Students working towards the Triple Award GCSE take extra lessons after school to cover the additional modules needed.

Moving & Feeding Aqueous & Organic Chemistry Physics in Action
